๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ iPad Parental Controls ยท Quick Guide
For Dibyendu ยท Apple Family Setup

Manage her iPad
from your iPhone

Everything runs through Apple's built-in Family Sharing + Screen Time โ€” no paid app needed. App timers, bedtime, content filters and safety, all controlled from your phone.

๐Ÿ‘ง Her device: iPad ๐Ÿ“ฑ Your device: iPhone โฑ๏ธ ~20 min setup
๐Ÿ’ก A quick mindset note: she's a focused, high-achieving teen. These tools work best as an agreed arrangement, not secret surveillance. Screen Time has a "request more time" button โ€” keeping her in the loop builds trust and removes the urge to find workarounds.

Step 0 ยท The foundation

Set up Family Sharing

This is what lets you control her iPad from your phone. Do this first.

  1. On your iPhone: open Settings โ†’ tap your name โ†’ Family
  2. Tap Add Member and add her Apple ID โ€” the one her iPad is signed into.
  3. You are now the Family Organizer (the parent/admin) and can manage her remotely.
โš ๏ธ Important: if her iPad uses a different Apple ID that isn't in the family, remote control won't work. Either sign her iPad into her family Apple ID, or set up Screen Time directly on the iPad (Step 1) with a passcode only you know. Both routes are covered below.
Step 1 ยท Switch it on

Turn on Screen Time

Remotely from your iPhone

Settings โ†’ your name โ†’ Family โ†’ tap her โ†’ Screen Time โ†’ Turn On Screen Time

Or directly on her iPad

Settings โ†’ Screen Time โ†’ set it up "for a child".

๐Ÿ”‘ Set a Screen Time Passcode that is: different from the iPad unlock code ยท one she does not know ยท with your email set for recovery. Forgetting this with no recovery email is the #1 mistake parents make.
Step 2 ยท The main toolkit

The core controls

These five do 90% of the job.

๐Ÿ”ž Content & PrivacyThe real lockdown layerSee below โ€” spend time here

๐Ÿ”ž Content & Privacy Restrictions โ€” the key bits

  • Web Content โ†’ "Limit Adult Websites" (or allow only specific sites)
  • Prevent deleting apps โ†’ so she can't delete an app to dodge its timer, then reinstall it
  • Prevent account & passcode changes โ†’ she can't sign out of Family Sharing or change the Screen Time passcode
  • Don't allow Date & Time changes โ†’ closes the classic "change the clock to beat Downtime" trick
  • App Store โ†’ require "Ask to Buy" + set age ratings (apps 12+, explicit music/movies off)
Step 3 ยท Inside the big apps

App-specific controls

These matter as much as the timers โ€” each big app has its own parental tools.

  • YouTube โ€” turn on Restricted Mode in the app's settings (filters mature content)
  • Instagram โ€” set up Family Center (Settings โ†’ Supervision): you see time spent & who she follows, with her consent
  • TikTok โ€” Family Pairing links your account to hers for screen-time & content limits
  • Safari โ€” already covered by the Web Content restriction in Step 2
  • Find My โ€” make sure her iPad shows in your Find My app for location/safety (Family Sharing enables this)
Step 4 ยท Optional, very effective

Network-level filter

A one-time setting that blocks adult content & malware across every app and browser โ€” even ones Screen Time doesn't cover. Free.

On her iPad: Settings โ†’ Wi-Fi โ†’ (i) next to the network โ†’ Configure DNS โ†’ Manual, then add these two servers:

  • 1.1.1.3
  • 1.0.0.3

This is Cloudflare for Families (adult-content + malware blocking). It can also be set on your home Wi-Fi router to cover every device at once.

Step 5 ยท The part that lasts

Have the conversation

Tools fail without trust. Agree together โ€” not impose โ€” on:

  • What the limits are and why (sleep, focus, eyes โ€” not punishment)
  • That she can request more time in Screen Time when she genuinely needs it โ€” you get a notification and approve/deny in one tap
  • A review every few weeks to loosen limits as she shows responsibility โ€” earned autonomy beats a hard cage, and removes the incentive to find loopholes
โœ… Do this in order
